What is the difference between sound impedance and sound absorption?

The context is known, the difference less so: when we talk about acoustics, noise problems and how to isolate sounds (for example for those who want to make music and protect the room dedicated to the project) we talk, often in a confusing and indistinct way, about sound-impeding and sound-absorbing materials.

What not everyone knows is that the most suitable solution in these cases is a right combination of these two types of materials; but let's proceed in order!

We talk about sound-impeding (or sound-insulating) products to define those panels that prevent the entry of sounds if installed outside or their exit if applied inside.
Sound-absorbing products, on the other hand, increase the quality of the sound by absorbing the sound waves and preventing them from bouncing off the surface and reflecting in the surrounding environment in the form of reverberations and echoes. In other words, sound-absorbing products do not interrupt the journey of sound from one space to another, but rather absorb some of its frequencies in order to improve the acoustic properties of the room or environment itself.

Stratifon products possess both of these characteristics at the same time: they are above all sound-impeding but also have sound-absorbing properties!

What size are Stratifon products?

All Stratifon panels are 100 x 60 cm long and wide. The difference, in terms of size, between the various panels is in the thickness:

Stratifon 29 = Thickness of 3.5 cm;
Stratifon 40 = Thickness of 7 cm;
Fonobag = Thickness of 5 cm.

What is the Stratifon 40 acoustic panel made of?

The composition of the Stratifon 40 panel is as follows:

Mattress made of 10 mm synthetic fibres;
Elastomeric membrane covered on both sides with a polyester veil;
20 mm glass wool. D= 85 kg/m3;

What is meant by Acoustic Insulation?
By “soundproofing” a building we mean limiting the propagation of all noises that can disturb the people who use and live in the spaces of that building.

Soundproofing, therefore, contributes to increasing living and working comfort. In addition to this, it should be emphasized that a property that is well soundproofed can have a higher market value than one without insulation: often the noise inside homes creates problems between private individuals.

What types of noise can be isolated with Stratifon?

In the moments of forced immobility that we spent inside our homes due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the conditions were created for a long, careful and slow reflection on our limits and our life plans. Reflecting, in addition to those pleasant sounds generated by nature, we also clearly perceived the unpleasant anthropogenic noises generated by the neighbors.

We heard the voices of children screaming and crying in the apartment next door; we heard the classic metallic noise of the elevator followed by the gong when it arrives at the floor; we heard the heavy footsteps of people.

We realized how unbearable it is to hear the toilet flushing at all hours of the day, the washing machines and dishwashers and the lessons of the student who practiced with the flute and guitar to fulfill his school obligations.

With good acoustic insulation, carried out with Stratifon products, it is possible to remedy all these domestic disturbances.

What are the differences between “Stratifon 29” and “Stratifon 40”?

As can be seen from the summary table below, from a technical point of view, the only thing that distinguishes the two panels is their thickness and, consequently, their weight (which is still very low compared to the acoustic insulation the panels guarantee).

The greater thickness of Stratifon 40 results from the presence of more stratification, which gives the product a soundproofing power of 40 dB (thus higher than that of Stratifon 29).
